South Georgia Detours
The Family Loop

Kid-Friendly & Fun for All Ages
Perfect for international families, multigenerational travel groups, school groups, and anyone looking to explore South Georgia through fun, educational, and family-friendly experiences.
Planning a trip for families means finding that perfect balance: something that keeps the kids entertained, the adults engaged, and everyone smiling. South Georgia does just that. With theme parks, history museums, splash fountains, and hands-on learning around every corner, The Family Loop itinerary is full of stops that invite curiosity, movement, and connection.
This two-day adventure blends outdoor play, local learning, and comfort food in charming towns where families are not only welcome—they’re expected.
Day 1
Moultrie Adventure

Morning: Outdoor Fun in Moultrie
Start your family’s South Georgia adventure in Moultrie, a welcoming town with big charm and plenty of room to play. Begin the day at Main Street Park, where open green spaces, shaded walking trails, and playgrounds offer a great place to stretch your legs and burn off some early energy. If you’re visiting in the warmer months, Moultrie’s Splash Pad & Kiddie Pool are refreshing options for younger travelers to cool off and play.
Looking for something a little more adventurous?
Reed Bingham State Park features a 375 acre lake, walking trails, a sand beach, playgrounds, and mini golf.—great for exploring with wide-open spaces to run and paddle.

Lunch Stop
Head downtown for a relaxed, kid-approved lunch at
Three Crazy Bakers, where the menu ranges from roll ups to quiche to salads and Southern specials. It's casual, spacious, and ideal for multigenerational groups.

Afternoon: Strolling & Shopping
After lunch, spend the afternoon exploring
Downtown Moultrie, which features beautiful historic architecture and plenty of locally owned boutiques and businesses. Pop in to shop for locally grown and handmade items ranging from food to ceramics. Don’t miss
Proper House —filled with art, homegoods, and friendly faces.

Evening
Book an overnight stay at one of
Moultrie’s family-friendly hotels. Many offer comfortable amenities like pools, adjoining rooms, and breakfast included—perfect for regrouping and relaxing after a full day.

Optional Evening Add-On
If your family’s still going strong, grab dessert from a local ice cream spot or plan a picnic dinner at one of the parks.
Moultrie’s small-town pace makes it easy to unwind together before resting up for Day 2.
Day 2
Vidalia & Albany

Morning: Drive to Vidalia (approx. 2 hours from Moultrie)
Start your day in
Vidalia, home of the world-famous sweet onion and a perfect stop for families who love food and fun. Let the kids snap a photo in front of the
Vidalia Onion Fountain, a water feature shaped like—you guessed it—a giant onion.
Then head next door to the
Vidalia Onion Museum, where interactive exhibits help explain the growing and shipping process of Georgia’s signature crop. It’s educational and entertaining, and the visuals, models, and video stations make it great for kids of all ages.

Lunch Stop
Grab lunch at
The Sandwich Shoppe—a tiny house restaurant that kids will love. If the weather’s nice, take the sandwiches or snacks to go and enjoy a picnic in one of the nearby parks.

Afternoon: Drive to Albany (approx. 2 hours)
Continue west to Albany for hands-on experiences and family-friendly fun. Head straight to the Flint RiverQuarium, where kids can come face-to-face with turtles, fish, and alligators in a blue-hole spring exhibit. There’s a walk-through aviary, an underwater cave, and touch tanks—all designed for learning through exploration.
If your group has extra time, stop by the
Thronateeska Heritage Center, which combines a science museum, history exhibits, and a planetarium in one convenient location. It’s a great way to sneak in some STEM fun before dinner. Or you can bravely feed the alligators at
Chehaw Park and Petting Zoo.

Evening
Wrap up your trip with a laid-back dinner at
Harvest Moon in Albany—it boasts a kid-friendly menu and comfortable seating for larger groups. If you’re not heading home right away, consider overnighting at
Merry Acres Inn and Event Center, with a pool and convenient shuttle service to keep the kids happy and your travel smooth.
